UNIT 29 - MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION

  • ANALYSIS - MUSIC VIDEOS AND THEIR PURPOSES
Video 1 -
Azonto - Fuze ODG featuring Tiffany
The purpose of this music video is to just have fun and enjoy yourself. This is being portrayed when members of the public dance along with the two people in masks. This video was made to spread positivity. The song is catchy so people will like and dance to it. It is a song that everyone can enjoy in one way or another.

Video 2 -
Thriller - Michael Jackson
This iconic song has a video just as iconic. A song made and choreographed by the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. The purpose of the video was to entertain the audience in ways they had never seen before at the time. Making this song was the best thing to promote the artist as he created the song and video himself. The video includes zombies and other fictional characters which make the video unique in many ways.

Video 3 -
The Real Slim Shady - Eminem
The purpose of this music video is to promote the song. This is because the song has a repetitive sound which can stay in people's heads, which then makes more people listen to it. It also promotes the artist because the video is very comical and involves other music artists that he was competing with at the time.

Music videos that increase the range of media an artist is active in -

Video 1 -
Like This - Jaden Smith featuring Rich the Kid
This video includes Jaden Smith who is an inspiring actor also trying to break into the music industry. He dances, raps and sings in this song. The environment around him is like a forest which could relate back to his acting career. Jaden also has a different image to most other actors/artists and has his own style which makes him unique.

Video 2 -
Wreckingball - Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus used to be a young disney actor who portrayed a good image to girls growing up. As Miley grew older she changed her image to become different and original to herself. She also wanted to break her clean 'good girl' image. The song that defines her transformation is 'Wreckingball'. In the video she sits on the wreckingball fully naked which could signify that change could be dangerous. 'We Cant Stop' was released earlier in the year which made it obvious that she had changed her image and personality.

  • MUSIC VIDEO HISTORY
1920's -
Videos are filmed in black and white. The camera was only focused to one spot and never moved throughout the whole video.

1950's -
Videos are still filmed in black and white. The camera is focused on mainly the artist as well as the other dancers in the video. It cuts to different locations throughout the video. There are different props used in the background as well as other dancers and musicians. The sound has improved a lot compared to the 1920's videos.

1960's -
Videos are filmed in an outdoors real life location and still in black and white. The sound quality has improved since the 1950's. The camera only had filmed one shot focusing on a person holding up lyric cards. Song by the Beatles was filmed in colour. There are many different scenes in the video. There were many more editing effects used which made it better than videos before it.

1970's -
Video looks like it was professionally made with the editing effects used frequently. Video is filmed in colour. Video is set on stage with various types of coloured lighting. The costumes are very stand out compared to the previous videos where the clothes people wore were just regular clothes. In this video it looks like the costumes were especially designed for them to wear when performing.

1980's -
Videos are very colourful and vibrant. Editing of the video was better, e.g. when there was 2 different videos in one. There was a mix of different colours throughout. They introduced the green screen to use for videos. The first video to be broadcasted on live TV.

1990's -
The quality on videos are much better than previous ones. The video looked well made, the cameras weren't shaking about like in videos before. Animations are much better than before. Some videos were controversial as they included some religions and cultures.

2000's -
Videos are much more colourful. The costumes worn are very casual. The singers look fairly young. The song would mostly attract a younger audience. Song was filmed in many different locations.

2010's -
Videos are professionally made with different editing effects such as low or high contrasts, filters and much more.

  • CONTROVERSIAL MUSIC VIDEOS
Revenue generation -
How much income you make from your video.
The music video is part of the marketing strategy and is used as a tool for promotion.
Is it the artist and the single? Is it the artist and the album?

Controversy in music videos -
Something that causes conflict between different groups of society (For example, culture and religion).
Artists make explicit music videos which end up being banned of music channels so it makes people want to see what they cant see elsewhere. They also do it to make profit.

It benefits the artist because they get more fame, which results in more money being generated (from sponsorships, sales and record deals). The record company will make profit from the album sales of the artist.

Controversial music videos -
Aphex Twin - Window-licker
Madonna - Feels like for a girl
Eryka Badu - Window seat
Justice - Stress
Mia - Born free
Rhianna - S&M
Tatu - All the things she said

Analysis -
Justice - Stress (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWaWsgBbF)
I believe this video is the most controversial because it promotes many different kinds of violence and gang culture, which obviously isn't a good thing. It basically consists of a large group of older teenagers going through the streets of france committing several crimes such as vandalism, manslaughter, harassment to innocent people and more. It also included a scene where they robbed a car and later set it on fire with a molotov grenade. The gang members are dressed in mainly black which symbolises negativity and danger. They wear black hoodies with a cross symbol on the back which i guess is their gang logo.

  • ASSIGNMENT 1 - UNDERSTANDING MUSIC VIDEO PURPOSES
Introduction -
The purpose of music videos is to promote artists and promote brands, but is mainly to promote the track. A music video or song is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.

To promote a particular song -
Azonto - Fuse ODG featuring Tiffany (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6CfVQqZ75o)
One of the main purposes of making a music video is to promote the song itself. This could be done by making it controversial to the audience by possibly using some explicit material, or promote the song itself by making it without the artist appearing in the video. The song i chose that relates to this is a song called "Azonto" made by Fuse ODG featuring Tiffany. This is a good example because the music video doesn't include Fuse ODG or Tiffany, what it does include is two dancers dressed in black clothes and white masks dancing in the streets of London. They get members of the public involved too, which promotes general positivity and people having fun. This will make the audience want to go out and do the same thing and eventually spread positive vibes everywhere. It would mainly attract a younger audience to go and buy or download the song. The song has an upbeat feel to it and is catchy so people can get instantly attached to it, and it could make them want to buy it. This is the sort of song that would come on at parties so people can have fun and dance to it. It was first released worldwide on YouTube on april 26th 2012 and has gained over 1.1 million views since with over 3,000 likes.

To promote a particular album -
Thriller - Michael Jackson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA)
Another one of the main purposes of making a music video is to promote the album. This can be achieved by making the name of the album the same as one of its songs (this is called a title track). The album cover could also feature sets, images and clothing that are used in the music video, so when people see the album cover they will instantly recognise the music video which will make them want to buy the album. A good example of to talk about would be a well known song called "Thriller" by "The King of Pop" Michael Jackson. Thriller is also the same name of the album itself. It was released November 30th 1982 and has sold over 65 million copies worldwide, which range from tape recordings to CD copies to digital downloads. It was put onto YouTube October 2nd 2009 and has gained a massive 350 million views with well over 1 million likes. The significance of this song compared to its album is the fact they both have the same name, and the clothing is also the same. In the music video it shows Michael wearing the iconic red jacket, which is also worn by him in the album cover. The music video also includes zombies and other mythical creatures and those are also represented in the album cover. When people sees this they will instantly think about the music video and will recognise those symbolic objects and that will make them want to buy the album. The album later made history as it was the worlds biggest selling album of all time, which would only attract a younger audience who don’t know him as well as others to go and buy the album.

To promote an artists change of image -
Lost without you - Robin Thicke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DdCoNbbRvQ)
Blurred lines - Robin Thicke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU)
Another purpose of making a music video is to promote the artist. It could be promoting the artist just for attention or it could be promoting the artists change of image or persona. For example, they could change from making slow and seductive music to fast paced, pop music. The example of an artist who in recent years has changed his style of music is Robin Thicke. The song "Lost without U", which was published onto YouTube on October 7th 2009, is a much more slower and seductive video. The pace of it is slow and has more fades than cuts. The song, as of today, has over 43 million views on youtube with almost 200,000 likes. The video has him and one girl showing affection for eachother, signifying that he is loyal to his significant other. Years later Robin published a song called "Blurred Lines" which topped the UK charts for a few weeks. That song is much more upbeat and catchy compared to his older song. The music video is also age restricted because of sexual and explicit content in the video. The song gained popularity almost immediately gaining millions of views within weeks of it being released onto YouTube.

The use of synergy to promote another product -
Writing's on the wall - Sam Smith (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jzDnsjYv9A)
The forth purpose of making a music video is to combine your music video with another creative industry (for example, the film industry), so both of them increase in audience/following and also get more money. A song that relates to this perfectly would be “Writing’s on the wall” by Sam Smith, which was the main soundtrack song for the latest James Bond film “Spectre”.  The film itself was shot in many different cities across the world, including London, Rome and Mexico City. All these cities were featured in the music video. The music video features the likes of Sam Smith (the artist), Daniel Craig (who is the actor for James Bond in the film) and other actors that are involved in the film. This song made history as it was the first ever James Bond soundtrack song to hit No.1 in the UK music chart. It remained at the top spot for 2 weeks. The reason I chose this song is because it promotes the brand of James Bond, it promotes the film “Spectre”, it promotes the whole James Bond series of films and it will combine both audiences, therefore more money is earned.

Increasing record company's income -
Telephone - Lady Gaga (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVBsypHzF3U)
Another purpose of making a music video is to increase the income for the record company. This can be done by having a known company pay the record company to have their brand featured in the music video. Depending on how well known the artist is, the amount companies would have to pay could vary between £50k to up to £1 million. A good example to talk about would be a song called Telephone by Lady Gaga. The music video for this song contains an extraordinary amount of product placement. All these well known companies, such as Coke, Virgin Media and Beats by Dre are all included throughout the video. This is significant because it increases the amount of money the record company gets for publishing the video, not only for the amount of people that view it but also for the amount of money companies like Coke, Virgin Media and Beats by Dre pay the record company. This can increase the income by a huge 30% and is a strategy rarely used but very profitable.

Increasing artists activity in different media -
Scarface - Jaden Smith (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gefCdLAGK4E)
Blue Ocean - Jaden Smith (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axAvQ4yfZ60)
The last purpose of making a music video is to increase the range of media the artist is active in. This can be done by having the artist be an actor making a song, or a dancer making a song or music video. A good example to talk about would be Jaden Smith. A well known and established actor (who features in famous films such as Karate Kid and Karate Kid 2), who made a few songs as a rapper. One song he made is called Scarface, which gained over 10 million views and over 100,000 likes. His other song called Blue Ocean, which wasn't as popular but still gained over 3 million views with around 35,000 likes. Having an actor like Jaden make a music video helps out both industries because the music company get money from sales and views, and the films that he is featured in get promoted.

Conclusion -
Music videos are used to promote products, which is anything from a single track to the company selling themselves. It warrants popularity to rise and sell more.

  • ASSIGNMENT 2 - STYLES, CONVENTIONS AND TECHNIQUES
Briefly define the following conventions of music video in your words and the effect they may have on the audience.

Lyric interpretation -
This is how people interpret the lyrics of the song and what the lyrics mean. Its the way that someone watches the music video in relation to the lyrics of the song. This convention is the most popular because the audience can have their own view on what the lyrics to the song really mean.

Extending or consolidating the song's meaning -
This is used to capture the audience's emotional attention. Sometimes songs will have a different overall meaning to the lyrics. It is very similar to lyric interpretation except it has a much clearer meaning, even if the lyrics do not represent it.

Lighting for mood -
This is where the lighting in the music video can indicate to the audience whether it is a positive, upbeat song or a blue and less positive song. Warm lighting features brighter colours like yellow and orange, whereas cold lighting features darker, more gloomy colours such as blue and purple.

Allusion -
Allusion in music videos is a convention that is related to the styles of referencing or pastiche. It makes a reference to something else.

Give an example of a music video which shows the following -

Special effects such as Chroma Key (green screen) -
Special effects are used to create more excitement in a music video, although the scene isnt real it still looks good and will appeal to the audience. An example of a music video that uses plenty of special effects is 'We Made You' by Eminem.

Multi-image (multiple images on screen at one time) -
This is where more than one video is shown at the same time. An example of a music video that uses this technique would be 'Pentatonix' by Daft Punk.

Cutting to the beat -
This is a way of editing a music video so each clip changes at the same time as the beat of the track. An example of a music video that does this would be 'Wings' by Little Mix.

An artist miming and lip syncing to a playback track -
Artists that mime to a playback track gives the audience the allusion that they are singing in time but in reality it is pre-recorded. An example of this would be 'Rockstar' by Nickleback.

Animation -
It is more common in Indie Rock and sometimes Dance. There are three types of animation style music videos: traditional hand-drawn, stop motion and digital. "Move Your Feet" is a single by Junior Senior, is probably the best example that is animated throughout the whole video.

Reference to or includes another artist -
An example of a music video that references another artist would be TGIF by Katy Perry, which features Rebecca Black.

Briefly define the following styles of music video in your own words and give an example of it being applied in an existing music video.

Illustrative -
This is where the lyrics of the songs have a literal meaning, and is something that someone can identify straight away.

Interpretive -
This is where the lyrics of the song give a deeper meaning, and is something that people will not recognise straight away. The lyrics of the song have a hidden meaning to them.

Surrealist -
This is when the video aims to break down the barriers between dreams, fantasy and reality.

Pastiche/homage -
When one media text refers to another, in other words when the music video gives a tribute to another media text. For example, the music may feature a small clip of a certain film, giving it a tribute.

As-live/in-concert -
When the music video is filmed showing the artist/band performing live on stage.

Parody -
Similar to pastiche/homage, this is where one media text refers to another but in a mocking fashion.

Animation -
Where the music video is not filmed in real life and doesnt include real life people.
